The Graduate Program in Chemistry of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), at the Master's level, was founded by an act of the University Council, in a session on May 2, 1968. Since then, the course has been operating on a regular basis, granting the Master’s degree for about 340 students.
Initially, the course was assisted by resources from the MEC-IDB Program and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) through the “Program to Reinforce the Teaching of Basic Sciences at UFBA”.
Within the new guidelines established by CAPES (Coordination of Superior Level Staff Improvement) for Graduate Programs, the Doctorate course in Chemistry, with concentration in Analytical Chemistry, started in the first semester of 1992. The course was approved by the UFBA's Graduate and Research Council on November 20, 1991 and received pre-accreditation by CAPES in October 1993. To date, 139 Doctoral Thesis have been defended in the Program. In 1998, the course was expanded with the creation of another field of concentration (Organic Chemistry). In the CAPES evaluation, referring to the 1998-2000 triennium, the course was promoted to concept 5 and in the evaluation regarding the 2004-2006 period, the Program was consolidated, with a high level of performance, maintaining the concept of excellence.
The Master's course in Chemistry, with fields of concentration in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry, and the Doctorate course in Analytical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, aim at training high-level researchers in their field of concentration. In this sense, it basically provides solid methodological training, developing in the involved students the ability to research and apply scientific knowledge to the reality of Chemistry.
The general orientation of the Program is towards the development of basic and applied research in the different fields of Chemistry, aiming at integration with the requirements of industry and society, and with the study of chemical reactions in the laboratory and in the environment.
The Graduate and Research Sector is under the academic and administrative responsibility of the Collegiate of the Graduate Program in Chemistry.
